KUCHING, Dec 14: The government’s effort to have a more efficient solid waste management requires the collective commitment of all stakeholders.

Towards this end, Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) is collaborating with Koperasi BandarayaKU Berhad and Rekajaya Supplies & Resources Sdn Bhd to promote the use of biodegradable OXO products from next year.

In its press statement, DBKU said regular campaigns would be held at shopping malls, schools and villages under City Hall’s jurisdiction.

This morning, DBKU Datuk Bandar Datuk Abang Abdul Wahap Abang Julai soft-launched the product. Among those present were DBKU director Dr Morshidi Ahmad and Rekajaya Supplies & Resources managing director Edward Yong.

DBKU believed that by holding periodic campaigns, traders, consumers and the community at large, city residents would eventually stop using plastic bags and start carrying their own bags when shopping.

OXO products take between one and two years to decay, whereas plastics take hundreds of years, depending on the type and category of plastic used.

“Therefore, the use of OXO products is important as it can reduce the environmental pollution problem and reduce the cost of disposal as well as plastic solid systems. OXO products is a product that takes a short time to break down, is renewable, easier to recycle, non-toxic and environmentally friendly,” said DBKU. — DayakDaily
