KUCHING, March 16: Dayaks working in Kuala Lumpur are urged to keep in touch with Dayak NGOs and associations there.

This was the call made by Tebedu assemblyman Dr Simon Sinang Buda, who cited the case of recent electrocution accident victims Damian Senin, 46 and wife Ronwina Mambai, 35 as an example.

“For those who are still working in Kuala Lumpur, we urge them to keep in touch with Dayak NGOs and associations in Kuala Lumpur so that their welfare may be taken care of.

“This (the case of Damian and Ronwina) is a good example because we are a strategic presence where the welfare of the victims may be taken care of and there are various quarters who are ready to help.

“And today, it has proven that our leadership in Kuala Lumpur, individuals and NGOs, are most willing to help. This also reflects the kind spirit for us from Sarawak,” said Dr Sinang at a press conference while waiting to receive the return of the three children of the late Damian and Ronwina at Kuching International Airport.

Damian of Kampung Daha Kisau in Serian and his wife Ronwina, 35, from Kampung Ruan Lubang Tiung in Simunjan were found dead in a bathroom of a flat in Taman Tringkap, Brinchang in Cameron Highlands on March 10.

Preliminary investigations found burn marks on the palm of the woman, who was believed to have been electrocuted when she went to help her husband who was showering using the water heater at the time.

Damian and Ronwina left behind their children Elisa Olivia Damian, aged 10; Joseph Rayyan Damian, 8; and Magdalena Damia, 2.

After their tragic passing, Dr Sinang said different quarters and NGOs such as Dayak Bidayuh National Association (DBNA) members in Kuala Lumpur, Sarawak Volunteers, ministers and MPs such as Works Minister Dato Sri Fadillah Yusuf and Serian MP Dato Sri Richard Riot had all reached out to the family in need by making all the necessary arrangements.

Dr Sinang expressed his thanks for all those who have helped the unfortunate family directly or indirectly.

He said from individuals in DBNA alone, the donation collected has reached more than RM10,000 which he will present to the family of the victims.

Personally, he said that he too will contribute but would not disclose the amount. Apart from him, he said other elected representatives among them Education, Innovation and Talent Development Minister Dato Sri Roland Sagah had also pledged to help the affected family.

“We hope the assistance will not only come as an one-off aid. Later, when there are requests for help, we hope many will continue to render assistance especially to help the three orphans,” said Dr Sinang.
