KUCHING, March 16: The trial dates of the defamation suit filed by Democratic Action Party (DAP) Pending Assemblywoman Violet Yong Wui Wui against Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Stakan branch chairman Datuk Sim Kiang Chiok has been fixed for Nov 21 to 24, 2022.

The trial dates were initially fixed from May 23 to 27, 2022 but the counsels for both parties had other trials on, therefore applied for the Court to vacate the initial trial dates.

High Court Judge Azhahari Kamal Ramli then fixed Nov 21 to 24 as the new trial dates.

Violet had demanded Sim to apologise for labelling the former as a ‘Sarawak traitor’ in his Facebook post dated April 29, 2021.

On May 7, a letter of demand was served to Sim from Chong Brothers Advocates, demanding an apology to be made on several platforms with regards to Sim’s Facebook post.

In the letter of demand, Yong sought a full and complete withdrawal of the defamatory words, with an apology in terms to be approved by her in one English language newspaper, one Chinese language newspaper, Sim Kiang Chiok’s Facebook page and also SUPP’s Facebook page.

She further demanded Sim’s written assurance and undertaking not to further publish the said publication or any similar statement concerning her and compensation of a reasonable sum acceptable to her as damages.

She also requested Sim to indemnify her in respect of the costs which she will have incurred in this matter.

Sim after consulting his legal advisors and the party’s legal advisors upon receiving the letter of demand, had announced on May 8 that he will be facing this matter head-on in court.
