KUCHING, Oct 16: Social activist Peter John Jaban has called on the public, especially the Dayaks, not to show up for a potential riot at Sibu Court tomorrow (Oct 17) in connection with the recent riot behind Kanowit District Office last month.

He said the police had detected certain parties planning to hold an assembly at Sibu Court Complex to show their support to those involved in the case, which would be heard tomorrow.

One of the parties was previously reported to have allegedly invited the Dayaks to support the gathering via a Facebook post uploaded by user ‘Engkecong Kampung’ on Sept 23.

“We must remember (that) the Dayak people in Sarawak are highly respected by people all over the country because they have a culture full of tolerance and have a traditional attitude that is looked up to by other people.

“Do not be caused by the incitement made by this irresponsible individual that the Dayak people themselves are divided so as to create an atmosphere of disharmony in this State.

“As law-abiding citizens, we must respect the court process and maintain peace and unity by not taking part in any unlawful activities or gatherings. Don’t take the law into your hands unless you are willing to face the music,” he said in a statement today.

Peter John warned that some deliberately manipulated the incident by linking it to a race fight, which triggered racial sentiments.

“I wish to remind the public, especially the Iban and the Chinese, to keep calm and not be easily provoked and incited by certain parties who only want to get a name and gain sensation and benefit behind everything by riding and triggering the Dayaks’ name.

“This case has nothing to do with the rights of the indigenous people,” he added.

It was previously reported that a fracas had occurred in Machan on Aug 7 involving two groups believed to be due to a misunderstanding over salary payment. The original police report can be viewed here.

On Sept 12, another riot took place at approximately 1.30pm in the parking lot behind the Kanowit District Office, which caused two men to sustain injuries and damage to their vehicles.

It was not confirmed by the authorities whether the two incidents were related or not and that there were various versions of stories that allegedly led up to tomorrow’s possible riot.

Nonetheless, National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang clarified that the recent riot had nothing to do with racial issues. — DayakDaily
