KUCHING, August 12: The peat fire at Daro District is now under control with the Fire and Rescue Services Department (Bomba) personnel from Tanjung Manis closely monitoring and assessing the situation.

According to Daro District Officer, Abang Mohamad Abang Turki, the peat fire was already under control since yesterday and Bomba was doing its very best to ensure that the underground fire would not spread to nearby areas.

Abang Mohammad said in a press release prepared by the state Public Communications Units that the fire started from the adjacent pineapple plot owned by a local villager, adding that Bomba personnel were also digging trenches at the affected site as a preventive measure to contain the fire.

However, he said, the best method would be to pour lots of water in the affected site to totally put out the underground fire.

Meanwhile, Daro assemblyman Shafiee Ahmad who visited the affected area donated a water pump to the local fire and rescue service volunteer team to assist them in fighting fire incidents in Matu Daro areas.

When contacted, Bomba state director Nor Hisham Mohammad said the construction of the new Bomba station at Daro was expected to be completed by the second week of September as it is slightly behind the actual completion schedule.

He said the construction costing RM6.33 million should have been completed within 20 months from the date of commencement on January 11, 2017. — DayakDaily
