KUCHING, Oct 14: A proposed perennial rice research plot spanning 11.67 hectares in Nangar Besar could pave the way for wider paddy cultivation in Daro, where about 500 hectares have been identified for a separate large-scale development proposal.

Daro assemblyman Dr Safiee Ahmad said the 11.67ha plot in Block E, Nangar Besar, had been proposed for research and development (R&D) into perennial rice, with engagement involving landowners already undertaken by the Ministry of Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development (M-FICORD) and the Department of Agriculture Sarawak, alongside Borneoland Paddy Sdn Bhd.

“Perennial rice can regrow after harvesting, allowing repeated harvests without the need to replant for every growing season.

“The technology could potentially reduce cultivation costs and labour requirements while increasing rice production,” he said during his debate on the Sarawak Supply (2027) Bill, 2026, at the State Legislative Assembly (DUS) sitting today.

Separately, about 500ha in Block G, Nangar Besar, has been identified in a proposal for large-scale paddy cultivation, which could create employment and income opportunities for the local community while encouraging younger generations to participate in modern agriculture.

Safiee said the area’s agricultural potential could contribute to local rice production and strengthen Sarawak’s food security through the use of suitable land, research and agricultural technology.

He expressed appreciation to the Sarawak government for introducing new agricultural technologies to Daro, particularly through the perennial rice initiative in Nangar Besar. —DayakDaily
