SIBU, Sept 12: While Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) president Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh’s intention to contest the Sibu parliamentary seat in the coming 15th General Election (GE15) poses a fierce challenge, incumbent Oscar Ling of the Democratic Action Party (DAP) is confident he can retain the seat.

Ling said this is because support for the Opposition is gaining momentum following the conviction of former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

“Indeed, Wong will also give us a challenge. We are very upset because DAP cannot cooperate with PSB regarding the distribution of seats.

“Due to that, we have to ‘fight’ each other even though we initially didn’t want to clash because we do not want to give an advantage to Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS),” he said during a lantern competition organised by Sibu DAP last night (Sept 11).

Though expressing his dismay at Wong’s candidacy, Ling was not against it, saying, “We cannot deny anybody from contesting as everyone has the right to contest in an election.”

Meanwhile, touching on Najib’s prison sentence, he said he could feel that the people’s support for DAP improved compared to the last State election.

“Najib being in prison will have a positive effect on DAP. I am confident that we will get solid support after this.

“If the people continue to support us as before, I am confident that Pakatan Harapan (PH) will return to Putrajaya,” he said. — DayakDaily
