DAP: Sarawak government must immediately roll out financial aid

KUCHING, May 27:  Following Movement Control Order (MCO), the Sarawak government must immediately roll out financial assistance for small and medium enterprises as well as petty traders.

This is according to Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarawak chairman Chong Chieng Jen who believed that RM1 billion will be more than sufficient to help these targeted groups to tide over this difficult time.

Chong who is also Kota Sentosa assemblyman suggested that the immediate financial assistance should take the form of one-month wage subsidy for all businesses and cash handouts to all hawkers and micro businesses.

“The existing systems of the government agencies are ready for a swift roll out of such financial assistance.

“The Socso (Social Security Organisation) has all the records of employees, (while) the councils have all the records of the hawkers and the Business Names Registries have all records of micro businesses,” said Chong.

State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas has announced the implementation of a 14-day Movement Control Order (MCO) for the whole of Sarawak effective May 29 until June 11.

He said in a press conference today that this decision took into account the constantly rising number of Covid-19 cases due to poor compliance with standard operating procedures (SOP) despite the previous Conditional MCO (CMCO) for months which later led to what he termed to be “critical situations in health facilities”. — DayakDaily
