Covid-19: Kuching records 725 new infections as Sarawak logs 1,772 cases

KUCHING, Aug 22: New Covid-19 cases reported in Sarawak stayed comfortably in four-digit territory with 1,772 cases today, as Kuching accounted for 725 cases, the highest among the districts.

According to reports by the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC), the cumulative number of cases in Sarawak has thus increased to 98,300.


Following Kuching with more than hundred cases each were Samarahan, Bau and Lundu with 242, 167 and 129 cases respectively.

Other districts that saw double-digit gains were Serian (99), Belaga (82), Tatau (58), Sibu (46), Bintulu (39), Mukah (36), Asajaya (20), Pusa (17), Simunjan (16), Miri (14), Tebedu (14) and Dalat (10).

The remaining districts with new infections were Sri Aman (9), Subis (9), Saratok (6), Lawas (5), Selangau (5), Song (4), Kapit (3), Lubok Antu (3), Kanowit (3), Daro (2), Betong (2), Limbang (2), Beluru (2), Matu (2) and Sebauh (1).

“Out of the 1,772 patients, 1,078 were detected following close contact screenings where 13 of them were symptomatic.

“Another 221 cases were individual screenings from active clusters where 38 of them showed signs and symptoms of Covid-19 infection.

“Adding on, 221 cases were from symptomatic screenings, 247 cases were from other screenings in health facilities, one was an Import-A case from Indonesia, and four were Import-B cases from Sabah,” said SDMC in its daily statement giving updates on the Covid-19 situation in Sarawak today.

Of the total, SDMC noted 1,486 cases or 83.36 per cent were in Category 1 whereby the patients do not develop any symptoms.

There were 282 patients with mild symptoms in Category 2, zero from Category 3, two with lung infections while requiring oxygen in Category 4, and two more in Category 5 who needed ventilators.

On Covid-19 fatalities, a new case was recorded in Lubok Antu today, pushing the State’s Covid-19 death toll up to 498. The 75-year-old male victim had hypertension, cancer and heart disease.

Meanwhile, 620 patients were discharged from hospitals across Sarawak, thus 15,092 active cases remain in isolation or treatment. — DayakDaily
