KUCHING, Feb 7: Sibu district topped the number of new Covid-19 cases in Sarawak today with 55 but most of them were identified from community screenings.

In view of the number of new cases identified from the community on the rise, the threat of Covid-19 is no longer confined to the Pasai Cluster.

The State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) in a press statement today said out of the 55 cases identified in Sibu, 34 cases were individuals screened through active contact tracing to positive cases.

It added that there were 14 cases which involved symptomatic individuals who were swabbed for Covid-19 at the Sibu healthcare centre.

There were also five Covid-19-positive individuals identified via Covid-19 swab tests at the Sibu healthcare centre.

Only one case was related to the Pasai Cluster in Sibu while another case involved a healthcare worker.

Earlier, Sibu Divisional Disaster Management Committee (Sibu DDMC) chairman Dr Annuar Rapaee during a Facebook live session with Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) chairman Clarence Ting revealed that over 70 per cent of the positive cases in Sibu reported in the past few days were in town and not from longhouses.

He believed that the coronavirus has already spread to Sibu town and is not just confined to longhouses in Sibu.

Citing statistics, Dr Annuar said only 27 per cent of the new cases reported in the past few days in Sibu were from longhouses.

Meanwhile, the Pasai Cluster which originated from Sibu continues its encroachment into the interior of Sarawak.

The cluster registered an increase of 71 new cases today with Song reporting 43 cases, Kapit (21), Bukit Mabong (3), Subis (1), Beluru (1), Lundu (1) and Sibu (1). — DayakDaily
