KUCHING, Dec 10: The Chinese community should consolidate their votes for Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) candidates in the coming polls to ensure the participation of Chinese representatives in the Sarawak Cabinet.

GPS candidate for Kota Sentosa Wilfred Yap Yau Sin said by being in the government, policies that are favourable to the Chinese community can then be put forward.

“Chief Minister (Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri) Abang Johari (Tun Openg) keeps talking about how he wants the Chinese to be in his Cabinet, in his government. He does not want the Chinese community to be left out.

“So, that is one of the reasons why the Chinese community, this time around, we should consolidate our votes to ensure that Chinese representatives will be able to be that voice in the government,” he said.

To consolidate and to be united means to become stronger, especially when the Chinese population is shrinking with time, he explained.

Yap, who is also Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Kota Sentosa branch chairman, said the needs of the Chinese community can only be brought forward when elected representatives are part of the government.

Only when GPS candidates are elected as assemblymen can they also help the constituencies with developments especially through Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) and Minor Rural Project (MRP) funds.

“So, for that reason alone, I think the Chinese community should this time around think seriously when it comes to actually voting,” he added.

The Kota Sentosa seat that Yap is standing in the 12th Sarawak State Election is one out of the 16 Chinese majority seats in Sarawak.

The others are Padungan, Pending, Batu Lintang, Batu Kitang, Batu Kawah, Repok, Meradong, Bukit Assek, Dudong, Bawang Assan, Pelawan, Tanjung Batu, Piasau, Pujut and Senadin. — DayakDaily
