KUCHING, Sept 10: Kuching’s status as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy is no mere badge of honour, but a responsibility that rests on the shoulders of every chef, cook, and food vendor in the city.
Speaking on behalf of Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said the prestigious recognition comes with a duty to safeguard Kuching’s global reputation, particularly in an era where a single culinary misstep can spread across the digital world within seconds.
“Every dish, every presentation, and every interaction reflects who we are. It can either elevate Kuching’s name or negatively impact our reputation,” he said during the Sarawak Gourmet Association’s 3rd Anniversary Charity Dinner, themed Rainforest Empurau Night, at the Grand Riverine Ballroom last night (Sept 9).
Dr Sim stressed that culinary teams representing Sarawak abroad carry more than their culinary expertise.
“They also carry the pride, honour, and international standing of the State,” he said as reported by Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas).
With global audiences constantly watching and social media amplifying both successes and mistakes, he urged culinary ambassadors to uphold the highest standards of discipline, professionalism, and excellence.
To maintain world-class standards, Dr Sim called for stronger collaboration across the entire culinary ecosystem, urging associations, farmers, educators, and government agencies to work together as one team rather than operate in silos.
He also encouraged experienced industry players to mentor the next generation of chefs, saying such efforts are vital to preserving Sarawak’s rich culinary heritage while ensuring it continues to evolve and meet contemporary expectations.
Reflecting on the event’s theme, he noted that local heritage dishes tell stories of sustainable sourcing, indigenous communities, and environmental stewardship, making them an integral part of Sarawak’s cultural identity.
“When we represent Kuching, give it your absolute best. We are not just bringing food; we are carrying the pride and honour of this city,” he said. — DayakDaily
