KUCHING, Dec 9: British Petroleum Company (BP) has expressed keen interest in establishing a partnership with Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros) for the development of Carbon Capture, Utilisation, and Storage (CCUS) initiatives in Sarawak.

Premier of Sarawak Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg emphasised that collaborative efforts represent a crucial stride towards cultivating a sustainable and clean energy future for future generations.

“The geological suitability for carbon dioxide (CO2) storage in Sarawak has captured BP’s attention, prompting discussions with Petros to establish a network.

“The Sarawak government hopes that potential future collaboration between BP and Petros will be able to conduct studies on prospective carbon storage locations in Sarawak,” he said during a meeting with BP at The Park Tower Knightbridge Hotel in London yesterday (Dec 8).

Highlighting recent developments, Abang Johari underscored Petros’ Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with POSCO Group, the sixth conglomerate in South Korea, with the aim of advancing the development of CCUS initiatives in Sarawak.

Notably, POSCO, known for its steel manufacturing, holds the position of being the top CO2 emitter in South Korea.

In an earlier presentation, Petros’ senior vice president of Corporate Strategy, Abang Arabi Abang Narudin, outlined Petros’ strategic direction in CCUS development.

BPC, a comprehensive player in the oil and gas industry, engages in exploration, production, refining, distribution, marketing, petrochemicals, power generation, and trading.

The company also demonstrates commitment to renewable energy, with interests in biofuels and wind power.

Later in a separate meeting, Abang Johari led the delegation of Sarawak government to hold talks with Hambro Perks.

This UK-based company specialises in technology-enabled businesses, furthering Sarawak’s exploration of potential partnerships in the technology sector.
