KUCHING, July 11: Nearly 1,000 runners lit up Kuching’s streets tonight during the Breaking News Run 2.0 Night Edition, turning the city into a vibrant showcase of lights, fitness and community spirit.
A total of 980 participants took part in the event organised by the Commonwealth Journalists Association (CJA) Sarawak Branch and the Kuching Division Journalists Association (KDJA), which aimed to promote healthy living while strengthening ties between media professionals and the public.
Sarawak Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts and Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah flagged off the run earlier in the evening. Also present were Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap and Batu Kitang assemblyman Dato Lo Khere Chiang.
Participants competed in either the 7km Competitive Run or the 3km Fun Run, passing through Kuching’s illuminated landmarks in a night filled with energy, camaraderie and celebration.
The 7km race began at 7.15pm, followed by the 3km Fun Run at 7.25pm. Starting from Pullman Kuching and ending at The Hills, the event attracted runners of all ages, supported by volunteers, sponsors and members of the public.
CJA Sarawak chairwoman Nancy Nais described the strong turnout as an encouraging reflection of the community’s commitment towards healthy living and unity.
“Seeing 980 participants coming together for a common purpose is truly encouraging. On behalf of CJA Sarawak, we sincerely thank all our generous sponsors and organising committee whose generosity and commitment contributed to the success of Breaking News Run 2.0,” she said.

Nancy also expressed appreciation to the runners, participants, media colleagues and volunteers, saying their support had turned the event into a memorable community celebration.
KDJA president Ronnie Teo said the run highlighted the importance of collaboration between the media fraternity, corporate partners and the public.
“In the media industry, we are always chasing the next deadline and the next breaking news story, but this run is a timely reminder that we must also prioritise our own health,” he said.

He added that a fast-paced media landscape required a resilient workforce, and initiatives such as Breaking News Run encouraged journalists and media practitioners to maintain work-life balance while staying physically and mentally prepared to serve the community.
This year’s night edition also featured World Cup-inspired event T-shirts with Argentina, Brazil and Germany-themed designs, adding colour and excitement to the run.
The event was supported by sponsors including Anytime Fitness, FHR Alliance, Ministry of Youth and Sports, Petra Energy Berhad, Pullman Kuching, The Hills, Lee Fah Mee Trading, TSL Marketing Sdn Bhd and Harissons Trading.
Participants also stood a chance to win lucky draw prizes including a one-year Anytime Fitness gym membership, Honor Pad X8a tablet, Brooks running shoes, Pullman Kuching staycation and dining packages, 2XU visors, Brooks caps and Attiya Spa massage vouchers.
Following the overwhelming response, the organisers hope Breaking News Run will continue to grow into one of Kuching’s signature community running events, encouraging more people to embrace healthier and more active lifestyles. — DayakDaily
