MIRI, Aug 7: Promises made must be kept, and that was what the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Air Unit did.

Yesterday, their original plan was to conduct motivational talk to 100 Form 3 and 5 students at SMK Baru Miri.

However, due to their job priority and commitment in ‘saving and rescuing’, these firefighters ended up fighting forest and peat swamp fire in the morning.

First, they carried out aerial water bombing from 10am to noon as forest and peat soil fire rages in Kuala Baram. They manage to carry out 24 sorties and put out fire on five acres of land.

After carrying out their duty, the team headed straight to school to meet the students who have been eagerly waiting for them since morning.

“Yes, we were all tired from our morning mission, but we will not let these students down by postponing the programme. They have been waiting and looking forward to this day.

“Without hesitation, I told the teacher-in-charge that we are on the way to her school when she contacted me,” head of detachment for Bomba Miri Air Unit Roslan Aziz said.

Apart from sharing their knowledge and experience as firefighters and the unit’s core duties, they also talked about aviation industry.

The ‘abang Bomba in red’ also gave motivational talk to inspire the students, since these group are sitting for major exams soon.

This morning, Roslan and his team did another similar programme for Form 4 and 5 students at SMK Lopeng Tengah Miri.

After accomplishing their last mission for this two-week shift, the team packed their red camouflage and head to the airport before they fly back to their respective home, while another team takes over the next shift.

“Thankfully, both programme were carried out smoothly. All the students and teachers were happy and excited to have us. We hoped that our sharing session and folding paper planes will inspire our young generation to fly high,” Roslan said. — DayakDaily
