BINTULU, Feb 1: Federal Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) Dato Seri Tiong King Sing has announced the cancellation of his Chinese New Year open house, originally scheduled for February 9, due to the devastating floods that have struck Bintulu.

Emphasising the need for a collective, long-term effort to support affected communities, he stated that all attention must be directed toward assisting flood victims.

“Many have lost their homes, belongings, and suffered significant losses. Given the severity of the situation, it is only right that we focus our efforts on relief and recovery instead of celebrations,” Tiong said in a Facebook post last night (Jan 31).

He further stated that he had visited the temporary evacuation centres (PPS) at Dewan Suarah and Paragon yesterday to assess conditions and ensure that flood victims’ needs were adequately met.

Expressing his sympathies, he also urged the relevant authorities to take responsibility for maintaining proper standards at these shelters, ensuring that evacuees receive essential support.

“During the visit, I observed several inadequacies due to poor maintenance, including malfunctioning air conditioners, leaking roofs, and overcrowded tents.

“I have directed immediate improvements and better resource coordination to ensure the shelters are safe and comfortable for the displaced victims,” he added.

He also instructed the Social Welfare Department (JKM) to manage food distribution efficiently, ensuring that every displaced individual receives sufficient food and essential supplies.

At the same time, he warned that health concerns may arise due to the high population density at some PPS.

As a response, a medical team will be stationed at Dewan Suarah today (Feb 1) to conduct health screenings and provide medical aid.

Additionally, he has coordinated with the Bintulu Health Department to mobilise medical personnel from other areas to assist the existing PPS.

“I will continue to monitor the needs of those affected and coordinate more resources to provide comprehensive assistance, ensuring that flood victims can endure this difficult and challenging time.

“Stay strong, everyone—I am always here with you!” he concluded. – DayakDaily
