KUCHING, May 23: The Baram community highlighted the need for more infrastructure, with a focus on road connectivity by upgrading former logging roads in the area, to Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg during a courtesy call on Thursday (May 22).

According to a TVS news report, Telang Usan assemblyman Dato Dennis Ngau said the Baram community also took the time to express their gratitude to Abang Johari for his support in developing rural areas and strengthening rural education.

“Although we are the ones conveying thanks (on their behalf), the residents themselves are very eager to come in person and express their appreciation directly to the Premier,” he said during the courtesy call which took place at the Premier’s office at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) building on Thursday (May 22).

At the same time, an invitation has been extended to Premier Abang Johari to visit Baram, with Dennis confirming that plans for the visit are currently underway.

Meanwhile, Dennis also expressed special appreciation to the Premier for his support through a special fund granted to SMK Long Berdian, a secondary school in Baram that achieved a 100 per cent pass rate in the SPM examination in 2024.

“Last year, I submitted a special fund request for SMK Long Berdian, and the Premier approved it. As a result, all 43 students who sat for the SPM, including 24 from the Penan community, passed.

“This is an extraordinary achievement and places the school among the top performers in last year’s SPM results,” he said.

He also shared the inspirational story of a Penan student who had only studied up to Year 2, dropped out for nearly nine years, then returned to resume schooling in Form 5 in March 2024 and successfully passed the SPM examination. — DayakDaily
