KUCHING, April 18: Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang has called on the Federal government to allocate funds for a flyover to be built to replace what he claims to be a “silly” and “deadly” roundabout at Mile 15 of the Kuching-Serian Road.

He said the Mile 15 roundabout has been the cause of numerous accidents and deaths.

“There is this roundabout, a silly roundabout at Mile 15. It has caused many accidents and people have died because of them.

“I don’t understand why this has not been removed. It has (been) designed by Federal JKR (Public Works Department),” said Lo in a DayakDaily exclusive interview today.

As former Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman, Lo challenged Stampin MP Chong Chieng Jen to bring the issue up in Parliament and remove the roundabout.

“What stupidity is this? And if we must have a U-turn at Mile 15, all we have to do is to have an elevated U-turn,” Lo continued.

He proposed for a flyover to be built along the stretch of road which allows one to U-turn without interrupting the traffic flow.

“KL (Kuala Lumpur) has storey after storey of highways and flyovers, (roads with) five-storeys if I am not wrong. We don’t even have two-storey flyovers.

“And this little U-turn, we can’t even elevate. We should be able to do it,” said Lo.

He stressed that since Sarawak has been contributing RM80 billion to the Federal coffers, there should be no excuse for the Federal government to allocate the funds for the removal of the deadly roundabout and build a flyover instead.

“So I hope YB Chong will also bring it up in Parliament and get it sorted out,” said Lo.

He expressed relief that there has been an agreement between the Federal and Sarawak governments that JKR Sarawak will manage projects under RM50 million, to avoid building another example of the “deadly” roundabout at Mile 15. — DayakDaily
