KUCHING, July 9: The Asian Development Bank (ADB) will work with Sarawak on green financing for Tanjung Embang as part of efforts to develop the area into a regional industrial, logistics and energy hub serving ASEAN.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said ADB’s senior management from Manila recently paid a courtesy visit to explore financing opportunities for the project.
“They came to look at opportunities where they can provide financial support particularly green financing, for us to develop Tanjung Embang,” he told reporters after officiating the Sarawak Energy Vendor Excellence Awards (SEVEA) 2026 here on Wednesday (July 8).
Abang Johari said the development is centred on a deep-sea port and an airport, positioning Tanjung Embang as a strategic gateway to strengthen Sarawak’s connectivity within ASEAN while supporting future industrial growth.
He said the project would be implemented through a public-private partnership, with the government providing the necessary infrastructure while private investors drive industrial development.
“The government will provide the infrastructure while the rest will be undertaken by the private sector,” he said, adding that ADB would engage with the Sarawak State Financial Secretary (SFS) and industry players to work out a detailed financing framework.
Supporting that industrial expansion will require sufficient power generation. To that end, Abang Johari said he has instructed Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) to build two 500-megawatt gas turbines in Tanjung Embang, providing one gigawatt of dedicated electricity supply for future industries.
He said ADB is among several international financial institutions that have expressed confidence in Sarawak’s development strategy, alongside the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) and Japanese banks.
“They are confident in our direction to develop the energy sector and our future economy.”
Looking ahead, he said the second phase of the Tanjung Embang development would strengthen Sarawak’s connectivity with Japan and South Korea to facilitate investment and deepen links with companies operating in the State. — DayakDaily
