KUCHING, March 4: The use of aquaponics introduces residents of Rumah Sepawi Nanga Sesawa in Song, Kapit to a new way of farming that can potentially improve agricultural productivity and sustainability in their community.

According to federal Minister of Works-cum-Kapit MP Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi, aquaponics is a farming method that does not require soil, pesticides, or chemical fertilisers.

“Only use fish water in which the fish excrete faeces as fertiliser for seedlings or saplings planted in cotton or a soft sponge. Water immersion causes the saplings to grow.

“It may not be new to those who are familiar with this system. However, for the residents of Rumah Sepawi Nanga Sesawa, Song in the Kapit district of Sarawak, this system will undoubtedly open up new avenues for farming activities at the longhouse,” he said in a Facebook post yesterday (March 3).

Nanta also thanked the 39 students from Universiti Putra Malaysia Bintulu Campus (UPMKB) who travelled to Song to implement the ‘Bergempuru Raban Bangsa’ programme.

“Hopefully, there will be benefits for the residents here, in addition to providing opportunities for them to try something new.

“I would also like to thank Katibas assemblyman Lidam Assan and his team for organising this programme,” he added. — DayakDaily
