KUCHING, June 2: Serian MP Datuk Seri Richard Riot Jaem has expressed his willingness to continue serving the people if given the opportunity and mandate in the next general election, saying he still feels healthy and capable despite having served as a parliamentarian for about four decades.

When asked whether he would contest in the next general election, Riot said the decision ultimately rests with Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and the leadership of the Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP).

“It is difficult to say but if I am given the chance, why not? I still feel healthy and capable of continuing to serve the people,” he said in a pre-recorded interview during his Gawai Dayak open house at his residence in Kampung Pichin, Serian today.

Deputy Premier and SUPP president Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian was among the distinguished guests who “ngabang” (visits) to his open house.

The 75-year-old, who is also SUPP deputy president, has successfully contested eight general elections, making him one of the longest-serving MPs in Sarawak.

Despite his age, Riot said he remains active and continues to visit rural communities regularly, especially on weekends.

Since the Gawai season began in mid-May, he has been travelling almost daily from one village to another to celebrate with the people.

“Last night, I attended an event in a remote village until 1am and only arrived home at about 2am. Yet I continue to do so because the people elected me, and I have a responsibility to stand with them,” he said.

Riot stressed that age is merely a number and that what truly matters is maintaining good health and a strong passion for public service.

“I am still a man of the people because they voted for me, so I have to be with them, despite my age. I have done my job, and I’m still going around, I’m still moving around. Then why not? If given the chance, why not?

“For the past 36 years, my family has given me tremendous support. They understand that I belong to the people and appreciate the responsibility I carry in serving them,” he added. — DayakDaily
