Abdul Karim: State govt ready and willing to provide funds for BASE jumping activities

SIBU, Sept 16: The government is ready to assist in funding to promote BASE jumping, says Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

Speaking to reporters after flagging-off the Sibu International BASE Jump (SIBJ) 2022 today, the Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts Minister said his ministry has been aiding other sports financially and BASE jump is no exception.

“Not many can participate as it needs training. If there is an academy, I am sure there will be a lot of enthusiasts who love this extreme sport. But we need qualified trainers.

“We will see whether anyone wants to come forward. So come to us for assistance,” he said.

Abdul Karim assured that associations promoting BASE jumping will get the necessary funding from the government.

On Thursday, Sarikei Kenyalang Skydiving Sport Club President Kasim Alias Ahmad Drahman appealed to the government to provide them with funds for their activities.

Kasim said the lack of funds is a hindrance for them to stay active.

Meanwhile Abdul Karim described it as symbolic that SIBJ took place during Malaysia Day 2022.

“For two years we can’t have it due to the Covid-19 pandemic. But now it is back. It is one of the tourism products in Sibu. This event coincides with Malaysia Day which is very symbolic,” he said.

The Minister added that they want the event be held continuously every year.

He also wished that more jumpers, be they local or foreigners, would participate every year.

A total of 33 jumpers are taking part in this year’s jump.

Among those present were the Minitsry permanent secretary, Hii Chang Kee and Sarawak Tourism Board CEO Sharzede Datu Salleh Askor.
