67 patients with cataracts, pterygium in Betong treated

KUCHING, Aug 9: Sixty patients suffering from cataracts and seven with pterygium from various places in Betong were treated for their ailments during the 15th Cataract and Pterygium Camp at Betong Hospital from Aug 5 to 6.

Known as the ‘Betong FirstSight Programme’, it was jointly organised by the Lions Club of Kuching Metro, the Health Ministry’s Cataract Clinic, and the Ophthalmology Department of the Sarawak General Hospital.

According to a statement, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, who is also Bukit Saban assemblyman, again sponsored the intraocular lenses for the patients.


A cataract is a dense, cloudy area that forms in the eye’s lens, while a pterygium is a growth of the mucous membrane that covers the white part of the eye over the cornea. — DayakDaily
