KUCHING, June 17: An oil palm factory at Batu Niah, Subis that has reported 32 Covid-19 cases so far is now ground zero for the new Sawai Niah Cluster declared today.

The State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) said this was a workplace cluster detected at the factory which was placed under the Enhanced Movement Control Order (EMCO).

Investigations found the spread of the virus to be transmitted through social interactions and close contact among the factory workers and family members living in the area.

“A total of 375 individuals were screened where 32 cases were found positive for Covid-19 including the index case.

“31 cases were negative and 312 more cases are still waiting for laboratory test results,” said the committee in a statement on Covid-19 update today.

SDMC also assured that all positive cases were admitted to Miri Hospital or the Miri Low-Risk Treatment and Quarantine Centre (PKRC) for isolation and treatment purposes.

Meanwhile, Sarawak registered five other new Covid-19 clusters today, with three in Kuching, and one each in Bau and Bintulu.

The clusters included the Jalan Stampin, Jalan Keruing and Iris Garden Clusters in Kuching, the Kampung Serikin Cluster in Bau and the Jalan Kidurong Empat in Bintulu.

With two clusters namely the Bungey Cluster in Betong and Jalan Sawit Cluster in Sarikei declared to be expired today, there are 92 active clusters left in Sarawak.
