KUCHING, April 18: The 12-year-old boy who was in critical condition at Miri Hospital Intensive Care Unit (ICU) following a fatal crash at Miri Airport Road on April 16 passed away this morning, after succumbing to his injuries.
The accident occurred around 2.47pm when a car crashed into the back of a stationary lorry, severely damaging the car and resulted in the death of a 39-year-old man as well as severely injuring the boy.
Following this, the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (Niosh) extended its deepest condolences to the family of the victims and highlighted the critical importance of strict safety measures for roadside operations involving heavy vehicles.
According to a press statement, Niosh chairman, Chong Chieng Jen reminded all employers and workers to practise the Hazard Identification, Risk Assessment and Risk Control (HIRARC) method to actively reduce risks and improve workplace safety.
In light of the accident, Niosh reiterated the following safety recommendations for operations involving vehicles on public roads, such as equipping high-visibility markings to alert oncoming traffic, implementing traffic management plans such as appropriate signage, road barriers, and speed limits, regular safety audits and equipment, frequent training for all personnel involved in roadside operations, and enhancing public awareness concerning the presence of service vehicles.
Chong said Niosh Malaysia is dedicated to collaborating with local authorities, contractors, as well as the community in preventing similar events in the future.
“Safety is a shared responsibility, and we must all collaborate to ensure the well-being of every individual, both at work and in our communities,” he said. — DayakDaily
