KUCHING, Jan 13: A jobless man was sentenced to imprisonment of one day and fined RM5,000 for stealing his mother’s savings, purportedly with the intention of buying drugs and gambling online.

The accused, 23, pleaded guilty to the charge framed under Section 380 of the Penal Code.

Magistrate Zaiton Anuar sentenced him to imprisonment of one day and with fine of RM5,000 or in default to ten months’ imprisonment.

He was charged with stealing his mother’s savings of RM3,000 cash at their house in Kampung Sinar Budi Baru, at about 6am on January 7, 2022.

According to the brief facts of the case, the victim hid her savings in her cupboard and the cupboard was locked.

On January 7, she discovered that her cash totalling RM3,000 was missing and she suspected the accused had taken her money because the accused would steal things from their house to buy drugs and to gamble online.
