Wee reckons door is open to victory, won’t be complacent in wresting Chinese-majority Padungan

GPS N9 Padungan constituency candidate Dato Wee Hong Seng

KUCHING, Dec 10: Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) candidate for N9 Padungan Dato Wee Hong Seng believes he has a good chance but will not be complacent in wresting the Chinese-majority seat which has been represented by the opposition for the past 15 years.

He vowed to take up the challenge as both GPS and Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) have the confidence to field him as their candidate.

“I will do and try my best to do what ever we can, and I think most importantly, I have given the people my report card,” he said during a press conference to launch his manifesto for N9 Padungan constituency held via Zoom today.

Wee was responding to a question from a reporter about him taking on the opposition in Padungan for the coming 12th State Election.

Wee noted that his experience in serving for 10 years in the Sarawak Tourist Association as a treasurer and another 6 years as the private sector representative in the Sarawak Tourism Federation will come useful in terms of servicing the people.

He also highlighted that he served in Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) as a council members for 7 years, before he became the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor for 2 years to date.

“Those are the things that I can present to the people, that I have put out my time for the people, and I think I have done my part as the Mayor, to cover everybody and assist everyone during the pandemic times.

“So if the people recognise what I have done for them, I appeal to them to give me another chance to serve you.

“I am not trying to be greedy. So what ever it is, that is still within my reach and I will be able to contribute. Together with my teams, we will be able to serve everyone and make sure that no one is left behind,” he added.

Padungan has been represented by opposition parties since the 2006 State Election where Dominique Ng Kim Ho from Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) managed to gain 8,002 votes to beat Lily Yong Lee Lee from Barisan Nasional (BN) who netted 6,585 votes.

Following that, in the 2011 State Election, Democratic Action Party (DAP) candidate Wong King Wei won the seat with 11,957 votes, beating Dato Sim Kiang Chiok from BN and Ng who stood as an independent candidate.

In the 2016 State Election, Wong retained his seat for the second term with 9,332 votes, beating BN’s Pau Kiu Sung and To Kuang Kim from State Reform Party (Star), which is now known as Sarawak People’s Aspiration Party (Aspirasi).

For this coming 12th State Election, Wee will be facing a four-cornered fight against Chong Chieng Jen from Democratic Action Party (DAP), Lina Soo from Aspirasi, and Raymond Thong Ee Yu from Parti Bumi Kenyalang (PBK). — DayakDaily
