KUCHING, July 10: Sarawak Police Commissioner Dato Mohd Azman Ahmad Sapri clarified that a recent viral video of a traffic police officer kicking a motorcyclist happened in 2020.
Mohd Azman in a statement today said the incident occurred when the enforcement unit of the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division (BSPTD) of IPD Sibu conducted a surprise inspection under ‘Operation Motorcycle’ along Jalan Temple, Sibu on August 25, 2020.
According to him, during the operation, a traffic officer on duty saw a man riding a motorcycle trying to escape by making a sudden U-turn when he saw traffic police conducting inspections.
“As a result, a traffic officer acted aggressively by kicking the motorcyclist until he fell and the incident was recorded by road users who passed through the location of the operation and (the video) has gone viral on social media and invited various reactions from netizens.
“Nevertheless, the incident went viral again on social media on July 4 via Facebook,” he said.
He said PDRM Sarawak takes this incident seriously and has conducted a disciplinary investigation over the incident.
He also said that the case has been settled and disciplinary action has been taken against the traffic officer involved by the Department of Integrity and Standard Compliance (JIPS) of IPK Sarawak.
“Meanwhile, the motorcyclist was also issued a summons for not having a rider’s licence under Section 26 of the Road Transport Act 1987, including other offences such as expired road tax, riding without insurance, going against the flow of traffic and vehicle modification,” he added. — DayakDaily
