SIBU, Feb 24: Students of the University of Technology Sarawak (UTS) will be able to secure employment at Press Metal Bintulu (PMB) following the renewal of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between both parties today.

Among the objectives in the MoU was for Press Metal to mutually develop pathways and opportunities for UTS students in employment, job offers, on-job training, and career development.

Others included the provision of financial aid and scholarships by PMB to UTS students.

Speaking at the MoU signing, PMB group general manager, Choa Wei Keong, said following the first time the MoU was signed in 2018, several UTS students are on the company’s payroll, especially in the electrical engineering field.

“We are pleased to have collaborated on this initiative, and we believe that the talented individuals produced by UTS have played a significant role in the success of the Press Metal organisation,” he said.

Choa added that their goal was to strengthen further their academic and industrial cooperation through joint research initiatives, scholarships, corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities, internships, and employment opportunities.

“With the end of the Covid-19 pandemic, we are all eager to explore the potential for collaboration between UTS and Press Metal,” he said.

Meanwhile, UTS vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Khairuddin Hamid said the university’s 36 programmes, accredited by the local authorities, were designed to meet industrial needs.

“We will be celebrating our tenth anniversary on April 1. We are serious about the quality of our programmes and would like to ensure they are not only locally accredited but also internationally. So our students can continue their studies overseas after two years here,” he said.

He added that UTS currently has 3,500 students and is targeting to enrol 4,000 students by 2024. — DayakDaily
