BAU, June 10: The RM74 million Phase 1 road upgrading project connecting Kuching-Bau and Bau-Lundu junction to Bau town has fallen behind schedule by 5.83 per cent, as the Sarawak government steps up efforts to resolve utility relocation and the resettlement of village infrastructure that are impeding progress.

In a TVS news report, Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development (Infrastructure) Datuk Ir Aidel Lariwoo stressed that delays in relocating water and electricity lines, as well as moving infrastructure belonging to nearby village residents, have caused delays in the road upgrading works, which is vital to linking the Pan Borneo Highway to Bau Town.

“The government is working closely with the Land and Survey Department and the Public Works Department (JKR) Sarawak to address these issues and ensure the project can be completed by the targeted date of April 9, 2027, or earlier.

“As of now, the project is 11.5 per cent complete, but it has fallen behind schedule by 5.83 per cent,” he said during a site visit and press conference on Monday (June 9).

The 3.65-kilometre road upgrade involves widening the existing road from a single lane to a dual-lane carriageway to improve traffic flow and enhance road safety.

Once completed, the project is also expected to serve as a catalyst for socio-economic development in Bau and the surrounding areas. — DayakDaily
