MIRI, Jan 31: A university student in Miri lost RM5,000 after becoming a victim of a job offer syndicate scam on Facebook.
According to a news report on TVS, Miri District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner (ACP) Alexson Naga Chabu revealed that the female student came across the advertisement last Monday and contacted the suspect via WhatsApp.
“The suspect assigned her tasks, involving making payments and boosting the ratings of a product, while promising a commission in return.
“The victim carried out the assigned tasks multiple times. However, when she attempted to withdraw the promised commission, the suspect provided various excuses and demanded additional payments,” Alexson explained in a media statement yesterday (Jan 30).
Since the incident unfold, Alexson said the victim had performed five transactions to three different bank accounts.
The victim only realised she had been deceived, as the promised commission never materialised.
Alexson said the case is now under investigation pursuant to Section 420 of the Penal Code, dealing with cheating and dishonestly inducing the delivery of property. — DayakDaily
