Unimas students hone their soft skills at Iban longhouse

KUCHING, Dec 16: Seventy-five Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) students held a high-impact programme with the urban poor community at Iban longhouse Rumah Jiram in Batu Kawah here recently.

The ā€˜Jelajah Kasihā€™ initiative was organised by the Faculty of Engineering Association of Chemical Engineering Students (Faces) and Social Entrepreneurship Society of Engineering Student (Senses).

ā€œThe aim of the two associations was to build more competent students not only in engineering skills but also in soft skills,ā€ said Unimas in a statement.

The event was launched by Unimas Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni) Professor Datu Mohd Fadzil Abdul Rahman.

Among the activities conducted were STEM Educational Talk and exhibition in collaboration with the Unimas STEM Education Laboratory. It was to expose children in the longhouse to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

Faces also set up a mini library for the longhouse children, while Senses conducted a ā€˜gotong-royongā€™ and demonstrated ways to produce organic fertilizer.

Present at the launching were Batu Kawah assemblyman-cum-Minister of Local Government and Housing Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian and Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang. ā€” DayakDaily
