Unemployed man arrested for insulting Miri police

MIRI, March 29: Police here on Wednesday midnight arrested a 20-year-old unemployed local man for posting remarks on a Facebook page that allegedly insulted the Miri police force.

The post was uploaded the Miri Community Facebook page.

The suspect was arrested at Bandar Baru Permyjaya, Tudan and is currently being detained under police custody for questioning at Miri Central police station.

Prior to his arrest, the suspect allegedly posted insulting remarks on the said page criticising the Miri police force for not taking action to arrest illegal Indonesian immigrants in the city.

The case is being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 and Section 50 of the Penal Code for defamation.

Under Section 233, if found guilty, the suspect could face a maximum fine of RM50,000, a one year jail sentence or both. — DayakDaily
