KUCHING, Nov 18: The Sarawak government will ensure at least 50 per cent of students in Sarawak International Secondary Schools (YSISS) are from the underprivileged group.

Minister of Education, Innovation, and Talent Development (MEITD) Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn said the policy will prioritise those from rural areas.

ā€œTherefore, the issue of competing with their city counterparts does not arise,ā€ he said during his wind-up speech during the Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUS) sitting here today.

He said with regard to the absence of science rooms in primary schools in Sarawak, his ministry has made recommendations to Ministry of Education (MOE) to address this issue.

ā€œAt the same time, the Sarawak government is in the process of building centralised labs, to name a few,ā€ he added.

On Nov 13, Datuk Dr Annuar Rapee, who is Deputy Minister for MEITD, said that the student intake policy at YSISS in Petra Jaya and Kuching (Mile 12) is based solely on merit and academic excellence, with no consideration of racial background. ā€” DayakDaily
