Underground gas leak prompts shutdown at Kuala Baram oil palm site

MIRI, Oct 5: All activities have been ordered to stop at an oil palm plantation site in Kuala Baram here following an underground gas leak detected at the location.

In a report from the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), the department received a call at 10.54am today, and firefighters from the Lutong station were deployed.

According to its incident report, the underground gas leak had reportedly been detected on Oct 3 at about 10am, at a drilling depth of 28.5 metres.

An inspection today found that the gas reading had dropped from 10 per cent to five per cent, while the gas concentration was recorded at 30 per cent of the Lower Explosive Limit (LEL).

The operation commander subsequently ordered continuous monitoring and further gas testing around the affected area. Following an initial assessment, personnel conducted another gas test, which recorded a reading of five per cent.

As a precautionary measure, all activities at the site were ordered to cease immediately, with no work allowed to resume until the area is confirmed safe.

Bomba Sarawak said further monitoring and gas testing will be conducted at 8am tomorrow (Oct 6).

The operation was declared under control at 11.30am and concluded at 12.40pm. — DayakDaily
