KUCHING, Dec 22: Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd (UMWT) ensures customers and the public that it is committed to transparency and accountability in light of recent developments surrounding the safety test of it subsidiary, Daihatsu Motor Co Ltd (DMC).

This comes in the wake of a statement released by Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC), which highlighted a procedural irregularity in the testing of models by DMC, impacting three Toyota models distributed by UMWT in Malaysia.

In a statement today, UMW Toyota Motor president Datuk Ravindran K, emphasised that they are dedicate to maintaining the highest standards and quality in their vehicles.

“Rest assured, we are actively working to ensure that all our vehicles in Malaysia strictly adhere to the relevant regulations and rules.

“We understand the importance of trust, and we want to reinforce the confidence our customers place in us. Our dedication to customer satisfaction has always been and remains our top priority,” he said.

He added that UMWT is working closely with regulatory authorities to promptly and transparently address this matter, maintaining its commitment to delivering high-quality vehicles to the Malaysian market.

In April this year, DMC confirmed that it has committed ‘malpractice’ involving crash safety test conducted for regulatory application of four of its models, namely the 2023 Perodua Axia, Toyota Vios (Yaris Ativ in Thailand and other markets), Toyota Agya and another model that has yet to be launched.

According to Reuters, Toyota Motor Corp admitted that the door trim on the affected vehicles had been modified with a ‘notch’ to minimise the risk during testing.

This modification, however, was not part of the production vehicle and there was a risk of the door interior breaking with a sharp edge, potentially causing injury to an occupant when the side airbag deployed in an accident. — DayakDaily
