KUCHING, May 28: “Do not misinterpret Sarawak’s intention. We are not here to deprive anyone. We want Malaysia to succeed—together.”
This is the statement made by Infrastructure and Port Development Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas when delivering his ministerial winding up address at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly here today.
“To those who disagree or feel that Sarawak is asking for too much – let me say this: Do not misinterpret our intentions. We are not here to deprive anyone. We want Malaysia to succeed – together.
“We are committed to the spirit of the Federation, and we believe in a shared prosperity where no one is left behind,” said Uggah who is also Deputy Premier.
He urged all parties not to politicize the PETROS-PETRONAS issue, and that all should respect the law.
“Understand that this move is reasonable, legitimate, and made in the interest of Sarawak’s long-term development. This is not a competition—it’s about partnership and progress for Sarawak and
Malaysia,” said Uggah.
He stated his full support for the stand of Sarawak’s Premier Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Openg in appointing PETROS (Petroleum Sarawak Berhad) as the sole gas aggregator in Sarawak.
To him, this appointment is not merely a policy preference; it is Sarawak’s inalienable right under Sarawak’s rights which were grounded on Oil Mining Ordinance (OMO) 1958, the Inter-Governmental Committee (IGC) Report 1963, and most importantly, the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).
These laws and agreements affirm Sarawak’s jurisdiction over its natural resources, including oil and gas and Sarawak is not overstepping as the State is acting well within its legal rights, he stressed
“PETROS is more than just a company. It is our torchbearer, our economic vehicle, and a symbol of Sarawak’s self-determination.
“Its leadership consists of highly competent Sarawakians, professionals with vast experience in the oil and gas sector. These individuals are driven not by profit, but by purpose — to serve Sarawak’s interest, to manage our resources responsibly, and to ensure that the benefits are shared with all Sarawakians,” said Uggah. — DayakDaily
