MIRI, June 2: Two male suspects have been detained by police in connection with a fire that damaged three cars in front of a store selling hardware and household appliances in Niah on the night of June 1.
The suspects, aged 34 and 48, were apprehended in Miri City less than 24 hours after the incident, according to Miri police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu.
The incident, which occurred shortly after midnight on June 1, involved three vehicles belonging to a 34-year-old businessman in Niah.
The complainant reported that the cars were set on fire in front of his store, leading to significant damage.
Alexson confirmed that a police report had been lodged, and the case is being investigated under Section 435 of the Penal Code, which deals with mischief by fire.
Police reviewed CCTV footage from the scene, which revealed three masked men arriving in a four-wheel-drive vehicle.
The suspects were seen splashing accelerant on the cars before igniting the fire.

Firefighters from Batu Niah were despatched to extinguish the blaze, while a police team arrived to begin their investigation.
The swift response from authorities led to the arrest of the two suspects, who are now assisting in the ongoing investigation.
Police have urged the public to refrain from speculating or spreading unverified information on social media, as it may cause unnecessary anxiety within the community.
