KUCHING, March 2: Two rabies positive cases have been reported this week, with one case involving a stray dog in Simpang Tiga and another involving a pet dog at Kampung Bobak in Singai.

Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng has urged pet owners to bring their dogs and cats for their annual anti-rabies vaccination, especially during the free anti-rabies vaccination, licensing registration, microchipping and subsidised neutering for dogs campaign.

“Rabies affects not only dogs but also humans. So please bring your pets for their vaccination,” he said during his ShallWeeTalk Facebook live today.

He disclosed that today’s anti-rabies vaccination held at Mayor Song Swee Guan recreation park in Tabuan Jaya until 4.30pm has received encouraging response.

“As of 9am, some 40 animals have received their jabs,” he added.

Wee also cautioned that dogs found roaming freely on the streets, regardless of ownership status, would be treated as strays during enforcement operations.

“We don’t care whether the dogs are ‘VIP’ or not. If you let it out of the house compound, we will treat it as strays. No one is above the law. We will proceed with the enforcement.

“Everyone needs to play their role and I urge for a collective effort from all sectors of society, if we really want to fight against rabies. We want a positive outcome and that’s to achieve zero rabies in Sarawak, particularly in Kuching,” he said.

Furthermore, Wee urged the public to report large groups of dogs in residential areas that pose safety risks promptly to the Council.

“If possible, when submitting complaints, we advise the public to include photos of the dogs so that enforcers can recognise them, indicate the exact location and approximate time of their usual appearance,” he said.
