SIBU, Feb 8: Two men were each sentenced to six months’ jail by the Magistrate’s Court here today after pleading guilty to stealing money belonging to a resident of the temporary transit centre for the homeless at Jalan Sanyan.
The accused, Pantau Chang, 30, and Bilong Jik, 37, were ordered by Magistrate Oon Kork Chern to serve the prison sentence starting from the date of their arrest on February 2.
The two of them were charged under Section 379 of the Penal Code with stealing RM1,800 belonging to the victim, 76, at 7pm on February 2 at the centre.
Section 379 provides for a prison sentence of up to seven years or a fine or both.
Based on the facts of the case, on the day of the incident the victim complained to the transit centre guard that RM1,800 belonging to him had been stolen by an unknown person.
The guard found the two accused and they confessed to stealing the victim’s money.
The guard then contacted the police.
Another resident had also witnessed the two accused opening the victim’s bag which was placed on his bed while the victim was in the bathroom. ā DayakDaily
