Two children among three killed in horrific Sri Aman crash

KUCHING, March 3: A fatal road collision involving two heavy vehicles and a car killed two children and a senior citizen at Jalan Selepong Maleh, Sri Aman to Betong Road this afternoon.


The incident happened around 2pm.

It was said that the impact of the collision trapped all the six people including the car driver inside the car. Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) personnel reached the scene not long after and immediately started the rescue operation.

The two children aged 5 and 9, and the woman aged 70, were pronounced dead at the scene by a medical officer after they were extracted from the crumpled wreckage of the car.

After extracting the victims, the firefighters handed over the scene to the police and returned to their station.

Meanwhile, according to a statement from State Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief Supt Alexson Naga Chabu, the fatal collision happened when one of the heavy vehicles which was heading from Kuching to Sri Aman reached KM28 of the Kuching-Sri Aman road.

The driver lost control and veered into the opposite lane before it collided with the car which was travelling in the opposite direction. The second heavy vehicle which was travelling behind the car could not avoid in time and hit the car from behind, causing the car to get sandwiched between the two heavy vehicles.

The three passengers in the back of the car were killed while the driver and front seat passenger who was also carrying a toddler were injured, with the toddler suffering serious injuries. They were taken to Sri Aman Hospital for treatment.

The respective drivers of the two heavy vehicles were not injured.

It was raining heavily during the incident and the road condition was slippery.
