Two army personnel charged with murder in Camp Sri Miri case, next hearing on May 30

MIRI, April 9: Two army personnel, Muhammad Afiq Syarim, 23, from Bedong, Kedah, and Mohamad Faies Khuzaimah, 21, from Tumpat, Kelantan, have been charged with the murder of Muhammad Muqriz Aseri of the 20th Battalion of the Royal Malay Regiment (20 RAMD).

During a court appearance today, both accused nodded in understanding as the charges were read to them.

Legal representatives, including Deputy Public Prosecutor Franklin Ganggan Bennet and lawyer Ranbir Singh Sangha, were present as details of the case were outlined.

According to the charge sheet, the incident occurred in the early hours of March 24, 2025, at residence 8-G-03 within Block B of the Bujang LLP housing complex, which is part of the 20 RAMD.

Both accused are charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 34, for committing murder with common intention. If convicted, they face either the death penalty or a prison term of not less than 30 years and up to 40 years, along with corporal punishment of at least twelve strokes.

Both Muhammad Afiq and Mohamad Faies were accused of jointly committing the murder, leading to the tragic death of Muhammad Muqriz, 21.

Magistrate Ashok Linggam has fixed the next mention date for May 30, pending further investigations including chemical reports and post-mortem results, as well as obtaining consent from the Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP). – DayakDaily
