KUCHING, Sept 26: Sarawakian para athlete Filemon Lirong Dionisus has fulfilled expectations by winning a gold medal in the 200m track event held yesterday (Sept 25) at the Sarawak Stadium during the 2024 Para Malaysia Games (Para Sukma).
According to a Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) news report, the Kenyah athlete from Kapit delivered his third gold medal of the games, clocking an impressive time of 26.65 seconds in the men’s T11 category, narrowly missing the event record of 26.30 seconds, which has been held by Penang’s Yeoh Kok Soon since 2008.
Filemon outran three competitors, including Johor’s Muhammad Rafique Farhan Saiful Nizam, who secured the silver medal with a time of 27.65 seconds.
His teammate, Ranggong Unggang, claimed the bronze with a time of 27.81 seconds, while Penang’s Teoh Emin finished in fourth place with 29.51 seconds.
Earlier, the 29-year-old Filemon had already won two gold medals in the men’s T11 100m and 400m track events, showcasing his athletic prowess.
Speaking to the media, Filemon expressed his joy at winning three gold medals, particularly in his home state.
“I didn’t expect to secure a third gold medal as my target was only two. This is especially meaningful since I’ve been dealing with a slight injury,” he shared.
Looking forward, Filemon hoped to maintain his current momentum and strengthen himself for future competitions, particularly aiming for qualification in the Southeast Asian Para Games. — DayakDaily
