Treated water supply in Kabong to stabilise by 2026 with major upgrades underway

KABONG, May 7: The long-standing issue of inconsistent treated water supply in Kabong District and its surrounding areas is expected to be fully resolved by 2026, thanks to major infrastructure upgrades currently underway.

In a TVS news report, Minister for Utility and Telecommunication (MUT) Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi expressed confidence in this timeline, citing the impressive progress of the Critical System construction project at the Lichok Water Treatment Plant, which is currently 10 per cent ahead of schedule.

“With the Critical System set for completion this October, the Lichok Water Treatment Plant will be able to increase its treated water output by 10 million litres per day (MLD).

“God willing, the frequent water disruptions in Kabong and nearby areas will be resolved by next year at the latest,” he said during an official working visit to the Betong Division Water Treatment Plant today.

Julaihi revealed that the Sarawak government has allocated RM52.76 million for the upgrading and replacement of aging and deteriorated pipes across the Betong Division, covering a total distance of 88.11 kilometres.

Additionally, under the Kabong District Water Supply Project, 12 sub-projects worth a total of RM107.5 million are currently being implemented, fully funded by the Sarawak government.

In a related development, the RM13 million high-level water tank project in Balai Ruai, Saratok has reached 30.42 per cent completion and is slated for full completion by mid-2025. — DayakDaily
