Tiong: Politics not about shouting slogans, making empty promises

KUCHING, Dec 9: Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) candidate for N52 Dudong Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing said there is nothing to be gained by shouting slogans, but instead one should walk alongside the people of the area to resolve local issues by prioritising their most urgent needs.

The five-term MP said politics is not about shouting slogans or gaining support with jiggery-pokery or rushing out grand plans and promises.

He added the candidate must also frequently engage with the people of Sibu and listen as well as take note of their opinions and concerns.

“In politics, I’ll be upfront with you. If I am able, I’ll get it done to the best of my abilities.

“Otherwise, it is wrong to promise the sun and the moon, and come up with nothing in the end.

“We must be down-to-earth and help the people see a clear vision and direction for future development and help them live a good life.

“It is useless to rush out with grand plans without walking alongside the people of Dudong and solving local issues by prioritising the most urgent needs first such as infrastructure and flood mitigation upgrades. And then, continue to move on to optimising what needs to be done,” he said in a Facebook post today.

At the same time, Tiong hoped that the voters in Dudong can choose the right candidate who have proven they can make a difference in the area.

“If they are worthy of your trust, give them a chance. Choose the state assemblyperson who deserves it, “he added.

Meanwhile, Tiong faces an eight-cornered fight for Dudong; arguably the hottest seat in the 12th Sarawak Election which goes to the polls on Dec 18.

He will be up against Paul Ling (Democratic Action Party), Engga Unchat (Parti Bangsa Malaysia), Julius Enchana (Parti Bansa Dayak Sarawak Baru), Josephine Lau (Sarawak People’s Aspiration Party), Wong Hie Ping (Parti Sarawak Bersatu), Jane Lau (Parti Bumi Kenyalang) and Fadhil Mohd Isa (independent).

The Dudong constituency has a total of 34,955 voters with two of them overseas voters.

The Dudong seat was won by Datuk Tiong Thai King who stood as a direct Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate in the 11th Sarawak Election in 2016.

Thai King later joined local opposition party Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB). — DayakDaily
