KUCHING, July 21: In conjunction with Sarawak’s 60th Independence Anniversary on July 22, Tamin assemblyman Christopher Gira highlights several achievements of the Sarawak government to commemorate the auspicious occasion.
Following the stagnated growth and development caused by Covid-19, he said Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg had set up Sarawak Economic Action Council (SEAC) to formulate the Post Covid-19 Development Strategies (PCDS) 2023, to not only drive Sarawak forward but a road map to lead Sarawak to be a high-income State in 2023.
“This initiative is to ensure Sarawak is able to embark on a full-fledged transformation capitalising on the mega trend around the world such as globalisation, supply chain resilience, digitalisation, new industrial revolution, circular economy and transition toward low carbon economy,” said Gira.
Moving on, he said Sarawak government’s initiative to establish five international schools in Kuching (2), Sibu (1), Bintulu (1) and Miri (1) under Yayasan Sarawak, has aimed to provide quality education to Sarawakians in light of the constant flip-flops in education policy by the federal government.
Similarly, Yayasan Sarawak which is taking over the Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus, the University of Technology Sarawak, the Laila Taib College Sibu, the Curtin University Malaysia, the i-Cats University College as well as the Centre of Technical Excellence Sarawak (Centexs) has intended to provide higher learning education on par with that provided by international universities.
Financially, he said Sarawak recorded RM32 billion in investments in 2022 resulting in the creation of more than 5,000 new jobs opportunities. Due to growth in trade and productivity, Sarawak is expected to register an increase in its revenue this year.
“This follows a positive revenue performance over the past four years, including a record-setting revenue of RM12 billion last year.”
In terms of food production, Gira said there has been attempt to increase production in rice, poultry and livestock as well as other cash crops.
Quoting Abang Johari, he said the Sarawak government envisions transformation of the State into a sustainable green economy, taking into consideration of environmental sustainability and at the same time, create opportunities for investment and growth.
“I fully agree with YAB Premier. We should understand that sustainable development requires balancing economic growth with responsible resource use and consumption patterns in order to protect our environment and mitigate the effects of climate change,” he said.
Agreeing with Gabungan Parti Sarawak’s (GPS) decision to work with Pakatan Harapan (PH) to form Federal government to ensure a stable government, Gira appealed for support from all Malaysians.
“Therefore, I appeal to fellow Sarawakians and Malaysians to give chance and full support to the current unity government led by Prime Minister Dato Sri Anwar Ibrahim to run this country.
“Let us together enjoy economic prosperity, social inclusivity and sustainable environment. For that, I would like to wish all Sarawakians Happy 60th Years Independence Anniversary,” said Gira. — DayakDaily
