KUCHING, May 5: Every longhouse should produce at least one millionaire as a new aspiration to empower the rural economy and not rely solely on aid, says Tamin assemblyman Christopher Gira.
In a news report from Suara Sarawak, he said that besides producing graduates as envisioned by the late Tan Sri Celestine Ujang, who was a former State minister and Sarawak Legislative Assembly speaker, rural communities must now set higher goals, making economic progress the foundation of development.
“I challenge every longhouse in this area to produce at least one millionaire. We cannot continue relying solely on aid—we must instead create wealth through the opportunities available,” he said in the report.
He made these remarks while officiating a community programme at Rumah Empera Bunsu, Sungai Wong Atas, Ulu Mukah, on Sunday (May 4).
The programme, jointly organised by various agencies, aimed to expose rural communities to opportunities in education, agriculture, veterinary services, and economic development.
The programme also featured a fire-fighting demonstration by the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), a Musang King durian tree grafting demonstration, the Christopher Gira Futsal Cup competition, and a lucky draw. — DayakDaily
