KUCHING, Nov 1: The Democratic Action Party (DAP) is targeting seven seats in Kuching and Bau for the coming 13th Sarawak Election.
According to the Sarawak DAP Facebook page, this followed a State committee meeting chaired by its chairman, Chong Chieng Jen, today.
The seven seats are Padungan, Pending, Batu Kitang, Kota Sentosa, Batu Kawah, Tasik Biru, and Opar, with the possibility of Batu Lintang as the eighth seat.
“As for Sibu, Sarikei, Bintulu, and Miri, we will share our decisions within the next one to two weeks.
“Our focus remains on bringing more voices into the State Legislative Assembly and ensuring stronger checks and balances for the people of Sarawak,” it said.
In the 12th Sarawak Election held in 2021, DAP only won two out of the 26 seats it contested.
Chong, who was at that time the incumbent for Kota Sentosa, contested in Padungan and secured 4,686 votes, beating out Wee Hong Seng of the Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) who garnered 3,488 votes, Raymond Thong Ee Yu of Parti Bumi Kenyalang (PBK) with 930 votes, and Lina Soo of Parti Aspirasi Rakyat Sarawak (Aspirasi) with 193 votes.
The incumbent for Padungan at that time was Wong King Wei who was a member of DAP but left the party in 2020.
Another seat was Pending, in which its incumbent, Violet Yong, has held since 2006. In the previous Sarawak election, she retained the seat with 5,188 votes against SUPP’s Milton Foo’s 4,648 votes.
Parti Sarawak Bersatu’s (PSB) Tan Kay Hok garnered 1,858 votes while PBK’s Teo Kuang Kim and Aspirasi’s Chan Chee Hiong received 978 and 204 votes, respectively.
The 2021 Sarawak election also saw DAP losing five seats—Kota Sentosa, Bukit Assek, Pelawan, Tanjong Batu, and Pujut—to the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) coalition. — DayakDaily
