LAWAS, April 27: The 21st Malaysia Games’ (Sukma) Baton Relay kicks off today in Limbang Division to promote the biennial sports event, which will take place from Aug 17 to 24.
The launch of the baton relay is a first in Sukma’s history.
The Sukma XXI Sarawak 2024 Baton Relay will continue to Miri, Bintulu, Sibu, Mukah, Sri Aman, Betong, Kota Samarahan, Serian, and conclude in Kuching on June 23.
Through a live broadcast by Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas), Sarawak Deputy State Secretary (Operation) Datu Hii Chang Kee who is also the chief executive officer of Sukma and Para Sukma XXI Sarawak 2024, officiated the flag-off for the baton relay at Taman Awam Lawas here at around 8am this morning.
Also present were the Sarawak Ministry of Women, Early Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development permanent secretary Datu Felicia Tan Ya Hua, Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC) chief executive officer Awang Putrayusrie Awang Reduan, Limbang Division Resident Unus Tambi and Lawas District Officer Ladin Atok.
Afterwards, Sarawak Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development (MYSED) Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah officiated at the opening ceremony of the Sukma XXI Sarawak 2024 Baton Relay.
More than 100 participants from the Limbang Division and invited contingents from Brunei Darussalam took part in the baton relay.
The runners were led by the silat sports icon, Zamri Matnor, who has won medals in every championship participated in locally and internationally. He was accompanied by Paralympic swimming athlete, Jamery Siga, and weightlifting sports icon, Lai Tze Hua.
The fourth sports icon involved is Jeffery Tamba representing weightlifting, and Bajury Ladis representing Malaysian Paralympic athletes in sports. — DayakDaily
