KUCHING, July 5: A study is currently being conducted under the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP) to address the frequent flash floods plaguing Jalan Mendu, with the aim of formulating a long-term solution.

Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng revealed that the ongoing assessment is part of a broader infrastructure project submitted under 12MP, and that a consultant is actively carrying out a case study to identify engineering solutions for the flood-prone area.

“This issue is being addressed and it has been submitted under the 12MP. Presently, the consultant is doing a full study. Once completed, it will form the basis of the engineering work and solutions for the Jalan Mendu area,” he said during his ShallWeeTalk Facebook live from Vienna, Austria.

He noted that the area was affected by flash floods last Tuesday, causing traffic disruptions, but assured that it falls within the scope of the planned project. He urged the public to remain patient as the assessment progresses.

Wee also called on citizens to play an active role in shaping the city’s development, stating that such efforts should not fall solely on the government or enforcement agencies.

“Urban development requires cooperation from everyone, not just the authorities. We need the people’s support, especially when it comes to issues like illegal renovations and drainage blockages that exacerbate flooding,” he said.

Wee highlighted the problem of some homeowners carrying out illegal property extensions, which he said have contributed to infrastructure and drainage issues.

He appealed to the public to report such cases and share photos to assist the council in its enforcement and resolution efforts.

“If you notice such activities, please take photos and share the location with us. We will check if proper plans were submitted and if necessary, halt the works temporarily,” he said, adding that some residents even resume construction at night despite enforcement warnings.

Wee concluded by urging the public to remain positive, stay updated on project developments, and continue supporting MBKS’ efforts to improve city living conditions. — DayakDaily
